LICENSING: NJ Medical Marijuana Program and it’s issues
The first Alternative Treatment Center (Medical Marijuana Dispensary), which grows and distributes marijuana for medical purposes, has opened in Monclair, NJ in December of 2012. What is surprising is that although overall 6 facilities have already been selected to participate in the program, Greenleaf Compassion Center is still the only one operating. This has resulted in a backlog of patients waiting for their turn to be treated. Since their opening on December 6th of 2012, Greenleaf has served just over 110 patients, according to the health department, and the remaining approximately 560 patients can expect a two-month delay.
There are legal challenges surrounding the management of the program that the NJ administration has to deal with. There are 3 cases that are waiting for appeals court ruling to disqulify some organizations it approved to participate in the Medical Marijuana Program as ATC, because they haven’t yet met state and/or local requirements. The delay is no surprise because the ATC permit processs for organizations wishing to operate in New Jersey is a very deligent process which requires information about the entity, conducts background checks of owners, directors, officers and employees.
